Health and Safety at Home

Modified on Tue, Oct 28 at 3:01 PM

Protecting your body, mind, and home starts with smart daily habits.

Creating a safe, healthy home environment helps prevent injuries, reduce stress, and promote wellbeing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Use these 8 steps as a personal safety checklist and reminder.

1. Prevent Slips, Trips & Falls

  • Keep walkways clear of clutter, cords, and loose rugs.
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub/shower.
  • Install night lights in hallways and bathrooms.

2. Practice Fire Safety

  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (check monthly).
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it.
  • Don’t leave candles, stovetops, or space heaters unattended.

3. Store Medications & Chemicals Safely

  • Keep cleaning products, medications, and sharp objects out of reach of children and pets.
  • Label all substances clearly and store in original containers.
  • Dispose of expired medications properly—ask your pharmacy for a take-back option.

4. Have an Emergency Plan

  • Know your local emergency numbers.
  • Prepare a basic emergency kit (flashlight, batteries, water, first aid).
  • Review your household escape plan and meeting spot yearly.

5. Ergonomic Workspaces

  • Set up your home office with proper lighting, a supportive chair, and screen at eye level. Take micro-breaks: stretch, stand, or walk for a few minutes every hour.
  • Avoid working long hours from couches or beds.

6. Support Mental Wellness

  • Create calm zones free of screens or work distractions.
  • Practice a daily wind-down routine: limit news, use soft lighting, try deep breathing.
  • Stay socially connected through calls, video chats, or community events.

7. Maintain a Clean & Healthy Space

  • Regularly clean high-touch surfaces (doorknobs, remotes, light switches).
  • Ventilate your home by opening windows regularly.
  • Reduce allergens by vacuuming and dusting weekly.

8. Stay Physically Active

  • Use home space for stretches, yoga, or body-weight exercises.
  • Take walking breaks around your block or inside your home.
  • Use online fitness videos or mobile apps to stay motivated.

Your home is your foundation. A few proactive steps can protect your safety, boost your health, and make your home your greatest wellness asset.
